Description

Mark Thomas led preliminary engineering and final design for this bridge replacement. The Winding Way Bridge over Chicago Creek is a little less than one mile east of the Sunrise Boulevard/Winding Way intersection in a residential neighborhood. Winding Way is a two-lane roadway approximately 32 feet wide. The existing bridge had a sufficiency rating of 54.7, making this bridge functionally obsolete and is programmed for replacement in the HBP.

This existing bridge was a five-span, consisting of concrete girders and widening on each side with concrete slabs. The replacement structure is slightly longer, approximately 132 feet long. Originally, the replacement structure was planned to be a multi-span slab bridge, but the pile extensions (pier columns) were very tall and presented design issues. After additional analysis, it was decided that a single-span, precast, prestressed concrete California wide-flanged girder structure would be the best alternative.
