Description

Mark Thomas provided surveying and final design services for the Stierlin Court Bicycle and Transit Improvements project, located between Shoreline Boulevard and the Stierlin Court Traffic Circle. The project included the design and preparation of construction documents to modify Stierlin Court to enhance safety for alternative modes of transportation, including bicycle, pedestrian, and transit users. It supported the goals of the City’s North Bayshore Precise Plan by improving access for employees and enhancing the surrounding community. At the time, Stierlin Court lacked bicycle lanes, forcing bicyclists to share the roadway with vehicles and buses. The design shifted all vehicular traffic to the north side of the center median and repurposed the south side for a two-way cycle track and buffered pedestrian path. Improvements were designed to integrate with planned upgrades at Shoreline Boulevard and the Stierlin Court Traffic Circle.

The original two-way, median-separated roadway was redesigned to consolidate both directions of vehicle traffic on one side, converting the other side into a protected bicycle and pedestrian corridor. This approach reused the existing roadway structure, significantly reducing construction costs and the need for new materials. The design also aligned with improvements from the nearby Charleston East project, minimizing redundant work and maximizing efficiency. Mark Thomas collaborated closely with project staff to develop a cost-effective solution that improved multimodal safety while preserving much of the existing infrastructure.
