Description

Mark Thomas designed interim improvements for La Paz Road between Rancho Niguel Road and Kings Road in Laguna Niguel to restore two-way traffic after a landslide prompted an emergency closure. The existing four-lane roadway was reconfigured to one lane in each direction by removing the landscaped median and shifting southbound traffic away from the landslide area. The interim design included protected bike lanes, vertical separation between travel lanes, regraded pavement for improved stormwater drainage, and new street lighting consistent with existing conditions.

These improvements, expected to remain in place for 3–5 years, provided a safer and more stable roadway while the City pursued funding for a permanent solution. Mark Thomas delivered the design in just three months, with construction completed in six months.
