Description

Mark Thomas led the civil design of a pedestrian and bicycle overcrossing carrying the Iron Horse Trail over the eight-lane Bollinger Canyon Road in the heart of San Ramon. The grade separation eliminated the existing crosswalk, improving safety, traffic operations, and promoting active transportation in the city.

The 340-foot, six-span steel cable-supported signature bridge, along with 900 feet of MSE wall approaches, was envisioned as a future landmark and focal point of the City Center development. Design features included trail safety and aesthetic lighting, ADA-compliant connections and detours, and landscaping consistent with the City’s approved plant list. Delivered through a CM/GC process, the bridge was designed in close collaboration with the City of San Ramon and the CM/GC contractor.
