Description
Mark Thomas led design of Phases 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the Folsom Boulevard Streetscape Enhancements and Beautification Improvements. Folsom Boulevard is a corridor with special historical significance to the Sacramento area. Pony Express riders rode down Folsom Boulevard on their way to and from Sacramento in the 1860s. Later Folsom Boulevard was the route of US 50, and the main thoroughfare into and out of Sacramento, until the new freeway was built in the 70s. Because of these changes to traffic patterns, and economic factors, the Folsom Boulevard Corridor had lost it original vibrant luster.
The City, realizing the importance of Folsom Boulevard as its “Main Street”, implemented a revitalization project to turn Folsom Boulevard into a Complete Street. Today, the Boulevard shines as Rancho Cordova’s main street. The 3.5 mile Folsom Boulevard Beautification and Enhancement project focused on the following key concepts:
- Pedestrian and bicycle friendly corridor Improved safety for existing roadway rail crossings
- Pleasant streetscapes to attract development opportunities
- Improved connectivity between retail and transit facilities
- Streetscape elements to enhance Rancho Cordova’s identity
- Traffic calming and safety improvements, including:
- Tree-lined streets and medians
- Intersections with enhanced crosswalks
- Continuous Class II Bicycle Lanes
- Predictable sequence of driveways and intersections
- Highly-visible mid-block pedestrian crossings
- Concentrations of pedestrian traffic
- Pedestrian-friendly median landings
- Special median and sidewalk enhancements
- Well-lit streets and sidewalks
