Description
Mark Thomas provided final design for the Central City Mobility project, improving the mobility for bicyclists within Central City of Sacramento, connecting users to neighborhoods, job centers, parks, and transit. This project was a major implementation of the Central City Specific Plan with improvements to 5th, 9th, 10th, 19th, 21st, P, Q, and I Streets.
Vehicle travel lanes on 5th street were reduced to create two-way travel for vehicles and bicycles with the installation of Class II bike lanes. The project also included roadway space reassignments on 9th, 10th, 19th, 21st, and I Street to add to the parking protected bikeway network throughout the grid. This required signal modifications, pavement rehabilitation, ADA upgrades, modifications to the US 50/5th Street Interchange, and modifications to the I Street/UPRR at-grade crossing.
The project was funded through SB 1 LPP funds. As a result, the project was under an aggressive project development schedule. This includes extensive coordination with UPRR, Caltrans, City Parking Department for changes in parking, and Sacramento Regional Transit for bus stop modifications.
