Iron Horse Trail Overcrossing Wins Dual 2026 APWA Awards

March 20, 2026

The Iron Horse Trail-Bollinger Canyon Overcrossing earns Project of the Year & Transportation Project of the Year ($25M-$75M). The 340-ft bridge enhances safety, ADA access, and active transportation in San Ramon’s City Center.

The Iron Horse Trail-Bollinger Canyon Pedestrian Overcrossing Project has been recognized with two major awards at the 2026 APWA Northern California Chapter Awards, earning Project of the Year and Transportation Project of the Year ($25M–$75M) for the City of San Ramon.

Our team led the civil design of the pedestrian and bicycle overcrossing carrying the Iron Horse Trail over the eight-lane Bollinger Canyon Road in the heart of San Ramon. The grade separation eliminated the existing crosswalk, improving safety, traffic operations, and promoting active transportation in the city.

The 340-foot, six-span steel cable-supported signature bridge, along with 900 feet of MSE wall approaches, was envisioned as a future landmark and focal point of the City Center development. Design features included trail safety and aesthetic lighting, ADA-compliant connections and detours, and landscaping consistent with the City’s approved plant list. Delivered through a Construction Manager / General Contractor (CM/GC) process, the bridge was designed in close collaboration with the City of San Ramon and the CM/GC contractor.
