Iron Horse Trail Overcrossing Named CTF Active Transportation Project of the Year
The award-winning San Ramon overcrossing enhances safety, connectivity, and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists while creating a lasting, community-centered landmark.
The Bollinger Canyon Road Iron Horse Trail Overcrossing Project has been named the Active Transportation Project of the Year at the 37th Annual California Transportation Foundation Transportation Awards Gala.
Located in the heart of San Ramon, this signature pedestrian and bicycle overcrossing carries the regional Iron Horse Trail safely over the eight‑lane Bollinger Canyon Road, eliminating a challenging at‑grade crossing. The grade‑separated connection improves safety and comfort for trail users, enhances traffic operations, and promotes active transportation while serving as a prominent City Center landmark.
In close collaboration with the City of San Ramon, COWI, and the CM/GC contractor, Mark Thomas led the design of the trail connection to the new bridge.
