Celebrating the Completion of the Highway 1 Auxiliary Lane/Bus-on Shoulder and Chanticleer Bike/Ped Overcrossing Project in Santa Cruz

July 30, 2025

We’re proud to celebrate the opening of the Highway 1 Auxiliary Lane/Bus-on-Shoulder (41st Ave. to Soquel Dr.) and Chanticleer Bicycle & Pedestrian Overcrossing Project; enhancing safety, access, and mobility in Santa Cruz.

We had an incredible time at today’s ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Highway 1 Auxiliary Lane/Bus-on-Shoulder (41st Ave. to Soquel Dr.) and Chanticleer Bicycle & Pedestrian Overcrossing Project in the County of Santa Cruz!

We’re thrilled to see this long-awaited project come to life. The overcrossing, also known as the “Whale Bridge”, provides a safer, more efficient route for pedestrians and cyclists to cross over Highway 1. This 780-foot cast-in-place bridge not only improves connectivity but also enhances the local community with its thoughtfully designed aesthetic features, developed through extensive public engagement.

The auxiliary lanes, connecting on-ramps to off-ramps, improve traffic flow by increasing weaving and merging distances, and the added bus-on-shoulder improves bus transit times.

We’re proud to have provided design services for this project, working closely with the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (SCCRTC), Caltrans, CHP, and local transit agencies to help make it a reality.
