Description
Mark Thomas provided final design for this complex $70 million dollar project, which provides significant benefit to the operations and goods movement through the Port of Los Angeles by providing a direct connection from the freeway to the China Shipping terminal. The project alleviates congestion and increases capacity while eliminating existing weaving issues.
The improvements include ramp and local road improvements, retaining wall structures, utility relocation, Port off-site improvements, soil remediation, and settlement mitigation. Key elements where the Mark Thomas team’s expertise supported the Port included: type selection of retaining walls to save $2 million and four months of construction; development of soil settlement mitigations strategies to reduce the overall settlement period to two months; development of reports to support design; permit approvals through Caltrans, City of LA “B” Permit, and Port iTEUP; and development of construction staging concepts to accelerate construction while minimizing impacts to the Port and community and keeping Caltrans and Port facilities operational.
