Description
Mark Thomas provided planning, environmental clearance and final design services for the Downtown Novato Transit Hub. Redwood Boulevard is a four-lane arterial with parking and bike lanes on both sides of the street and serves as the access point for several commercial buildings and restaurants. The project serves Marin Transit and Golden Gate Transit buses and reconstructed the transfer hub to allow for additional buses and independent bus services to ensure on-time departures and arrivals.
The reconstruction addressed numerous deficiencies with the existing facility including problematic sight lines for buses entering and exiting the hub, poor boarding/alighting platforms for transit customers, insufficient curb lengths for multiple buses to load and unload passengers, deterioration of the existing shelter, poor lighting and other pedestrian safety measures in and around the Hub.
The facility redesign included a center platform design for improved passenger security and transfer ability, a signature context-sensitive canopy structure, demolition, tree removal, grading, paving, curb, gutter, sidewalk, water quality features, ADA accessibility, lighting, signing and striping; and landscaping and irrigation. Reconstruction of the hub corrected the existing problems, provided for increased bus operations, with architecturally appealing aesthetics that was also context sensitive.
