SR 4/Mokelumne Trail Pedestrian and Bicycle Overcrossing

Final design services for a pedestrian overcrossing reconnecting the Mokelumne Trail in Brentwood.

Details

Description

Mark Thomas designed this new 900-foot pedestrian overcrossing of SR 4. We prepared and analyzed multiple alternatives to relink the Mokelumne Coast to Crest Trail which is a Class I bicycle/pedestrian route along the East Bay Municipal Utility District Mokelumne aqueduct right of way in the City of Brentwood. Mark Thomas developed multiple alignment and structure type alternatives for the gap closure project which was bisected by the recently completed SR 4 Bypass project.

Through the preliminary design process, Mark Thomas developed construction cost estimates for multiple bridge types including cast-in-place concrete box girder, prefabricated steel truss, and ornamental steel arch. For each alternative we analyzed right of way impacts, construction cost, and potential construction impacts to the Mokelumne pipeline – the primary water source for much of Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

The project involved extensive stakeholder outreach with both adjacent property owners, local schools, and utility and municipal agencies.
