Mark Thomas Selected to Design New All-Weather Bridge for Avenue 50 in La Quinta, Improving Safety and Circulation

June 25, 2024

The City of La Quinta has selected our team to design a new all-weather bridge replacing the Avenue 50 low-water crossing at the CVWD Evacuation Channel, improving circulation, safety, and addressing frequent flooding issues.

We’re thrilled to announce that the City of La Quinta has selected our team to prepare the preliminary engineering, environmental documentation and the plans, specifications, and engineer’s estimate (PS&E) for the replacement of the Avenue 50 low-water crossing at the Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) Evacuation Channel with a new all-weather bridge to improve circulation, increase safety and address frequent inundation.

Avenue 50 is a primary arterial highway, designated for four lanes per the City’s General Plan, and is a key east-west route. Just east of Washington Street, Avenue 50 crosses the CVWD Evacuation Channel via a low-water crossing. As such, it does not meet the circulation and year-round needs of the surrounding neighborhoods, schools, and businesses. The crossing is a safety concern during heavy storms that produce potential flooding. To address these issues, our team will replace the low water crossing with a new bridge,e providing the community with a reliable, direct route for public safety and health by improving emergency response times and unlimited access for residents and schools. Federal funding has been secured through the Highway Bridge Program (HBP).
