We Deliver Simple to Complex Bridge Projects

We plan, design, and oversee the construction of a wide range of bridge projects, including new structures, replacements, and rehabilitations. Our experience spans rural creek crossings and pedestrian bridges to complex arterial grade separations and freeway overcrossings. We are proficient in the design of cast-in-place concrete, precast concrete, and steel structures, selecting the most appropriate materials and methods to suit each project’s unique site conditions and performance requirements. We lead bridge feasibility studies, prepare Bridge Type Selection Reports, and prepare final plans, specifications & estimates. In addition, we develop Bridge Preventive Maintenance Program (BPMP) reports and design corresponding improvements, provide bridge inspection services, and design seismic and structural retrofits for historic structures, preserving their integrity while meeting modern safety standards.

Pedestrian Bridges
We Deliver Pedestrian Bridges to Improve Connectivity
A core specialty of our firm is active transportation, with a focus on bicycle and pedestrian facilities that enhance connectivity and safety. Many of these projects involve critical crossing structures, and we have designed dozens of bicycle and pedestrian bridges over local roadways, rail corridors, waterways, and highway facilities. Our experience includes a variety of structure types, from prefabricated truss and girder bridges to signature structures, tailored to site conditions and community needs. We prioritize accessibility, safety, and aesthetics, working closely with stakeholders to deliver functional and context-sensitive crossings.

Signature Bridges
We Design One-of-a-Kind Signature Structures
Mark Thomas team members have experience in the design of signature structures that serve as both functional infrastructure and iconic visual elements within a community. Our approach balances aesthetics, structural performance, and constructability to create bridges and structures that reflect the character and identity of their surroundings. We have designed a variety of signature structure types, including cable-stayed, arch, and steel truss bridges, each tailored to its unique context and setting. We collaborate closely with bridge architects, stakeholders, and the public to develop context-sensitive designs that enhance the user experience and support placemaking.

Bridge Inspections
Our Team Includes Experienced Bridge Inspectors
Our highly experienced bridge engineers have been inspecting and evaluating bridges for more than two decades. Mark Thomas’ bridge inspectors have completed FHWA-approved comprehensive bridge inspection training programs, which cover all aspects of bridge inspection and enables our bridge inspectors to relate conditions observed on a bridge to established criteria. We have a thorough understanding of the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and the Bridge Inspector’s Reference Manual (BIRM). We have spent significant time in the field performing site investigations and used this experience to develop repair strategies and designs ranging from simple deck treatment to complex rehabilitations.
