Construction Inspector - Sacramento

OFFICE LOCATION: Sacramento

The role of the Construction Inspector is to provide oversight to ensure the construction of a variety of public works projects, such as highways, streets, bridges, and other related transportation projects conform to contract & design specifications, applicable standards, codes & ordinances, and health & safety rules and regulations. The Construction Inspector performs the job duties representing the best interest of the Company and the owner (the Client) of the constructed projects. The Construction Inspector will take direction from a Resident Engineer or Project Manager with overall authority coming from the Principal in Charge.

General Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that contractors’ construction methods, equipment, standards, workmanship and quantity & quality of materials conforms with design specifications & plans, codes, permits and regulations
  • Monitor construction sites on a designated frequency to ensure overall progress (scope and schedule) and compliance
  • Provide timely and accurate communication and documentation, both verbally and in writing, as required or as necessary
  • Maintain professional relationships between design staff, owner/client representatives, and contractors’ staff and personnel
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the Resident Engineer or Project Manager or their designees
  • Reviews and understands plans, specifications, shop drawings , and pertinent information related to codes, permitting, ordinances, health & safety rules and regulations.
  • Review and understand construction means, methods & procedures, use of appropriate equipment, relevant to public works projects, including but not limited to excavation, fill and grading operations, placement of forms for concrete, concrete pouring and mixing, structural steel & reinforcement, asphalt paving, drainage, utility, and related construction activities
  • Understand and differentiate among various inspection methods
  • Reflect knowledge and understanding for appropriate traffic controls
  • Maintain concise and accurate documentation
  • Provide feedback and reports on designated frequencies including the use of photographs
  • Provide immediate communications and notifications to appropriate parties regarding variances from the designs, plans & specifications, violations of codes, rules and regulations, unforeseen problems, accidents & injuries on the project site
  • Adhere to work schedules, scopes & budgets
  • Communicate and write clearly, concisely and in a professional manner
  • Observe all appropriate safety precautions as required by the Contract including, but not limited to, CA/OSHA General Industry Safety Orders, Confined Space, Respiratory Protection Program, and Directives

Education, skills and abilities:

  • Minimum high school diploma.   Additional relevant education a strong plus, specifically a 2 or 4-year degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction management
  • Knowledge and experience in carpentry, heavy construction, steel and concrete also a plus
  • 2-5+ years of relevant work experience
  • A relevant certification in inspection is another added plus
  • Basic knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in construction and maintenance
  • Experienced in the use of hand and power tools, including air compressors, jack hammers, and cement mixers
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks and prioritize accordingly
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal skills
  • Ability to read various engineering drawings and specifications
  • Proficient making the basic mathematical calculation in the work area.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to observe and monitor work to determine compliance with prescribed specifications & standards
  • Understands and complies with safety procedures
  • Ability to work & collaborate in a team environment
  • Ability to travel and work variable hours that align with construction project schedules
  • Holds a valid driver’s license in the State of California
