Richard K. Tanaka, PE
President
Principal in Charge
In 1973, Tanaka joined Mark Thomas & Company, becoming a firm principal in 1979 and its president in 1999. Tanaka has more than 30 years’ experience in planning, design, and construction of municipal and transportation projects. Over the course of his career, he has developed an extensive knowledge base of policies and design procedures for numerous agencies and cities within the Bay Area. His record of excellence in managing and meeting fast track schedules for projects has brought great financial value to our clientele and helped them meet public needs. As a firm principal, Tanaka has traditionally led and managed its most complex and multi-faceted projects.
Education: M.S. in Public Works Administration, University of Santa Clara; B.S. in Civil Engineering, University of California at Berkeley

Robert A. Himes, PE
Principal in Charge
Hime’s able management of the ever-increasing number of projects and staff in the Sacramento office has led to his position of company principal. Himes serves as regional division manager for the Sacramento office. He is responsible for overseeing Mark Thomas & Company’s Sacramento and Northern Central Valley operations as well as manages large, complex transportation and municipal projects. A Mark Thomas & Company veteran since 1986, Himes is a registered civil engineer in California and holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of California at Berkeley.
