U.S. 101/East Dunne Avenue Interchange, Santa Clara County

The Project

This project improved the U.S. 101/East Dunne Avenue Interchange in the City of Morgan Hill and the County of Santa Clara. The project consisted of constructing a loop on ramp from eastbound Dunne Avenue to northbound U.S. 101, and widening the East Dunne Avenue Bridge and adjacent city street.

MTCo prepared a combined PSR/PR, final PS&E and funding assistance to the City of Morgan Hill.

Through our pre-design report, MTCo identified a separate bridge to be built adjacent to the existing bridge with a higher profile.

We also designed and constructed a tie-back wall and MSE retaining wall to accommodate traffic and land usage. Final PS&E was delivered to the City under the contract budget amount and the excess funds were utilized for construction support services.

The Challenges

Design: When the existing overcrossing was constructed, the widening of the existing bridge with falsework was not accounted for in the original design. The design challenge was to widen the existing bridge while maintaining the minimum vertical clearance for falsework opening.

Implementation: This was one of the first projects in which a combination of local funds and STIP funds were used. MTCo provided assistance to the City of Morgan Hill with processing all documents related to the release of STIP funds for the project.

The Results

MTCo provided a creative design solution for the bridge widening, which was to provide a new separate and parallel bridge with a shorter span to reduce elevation differential between the new bridge and the existing bridge.

Our assistance and guidance in the new process for securing funding ensured that the project was fully funded in a timely manner prior to advertisement.
