I-880 Widening Project, From SR 237 to North First Street, Santa Clara County
The Project
Prior to passage of Santa Clara County Measure A+B, I-880 corridor stretching from U.S. 101 to SR 237, approximately 6 miles was the only segment of I-880 that remained as a four lane facility. With a new measure passage, this project was the highest priority project in Santa Clara County.
The Challenges
During the planning phase because of the limited construction funding available for the project, the project was segregated into two separate implementations. The phase one was to widen to the median to upgrade this segment of I-880 to six lane facility. Being a fast track project, MTCo performed risk design and completed 95% PS&E concurrent with the environmental clearance.
The second phase was to widen to the outside to ultimately bring 1-880 to an eight lane facility, which is now fully funded by CMIA.
The Results
VTA, in cooperation with Caltrans, bid the phase one project with 95% PS&E with local agency's construction administration process. Phase one project was constructed and opened to traffic in 2004, almost two years ahead of the schedule. With CMIA funding, this corridor will again be widened to provide HOV lane.
