SR 65/Sunset Boulevard Interchange, Placer County

The Project

Sponsored by Placer County, this project consists of improving traffic operations through conversion of an at-grade, signalized intersection, to a grade-separated interchange on Route 65 at Sunset Boulevard. The proposed interchange is a Type L-9 partial cloverleaf configuration. The structure will be a two-span, post-tensioned concrete box girder bridge, approximately 335-feet long by 113-feet wide carrying a 24-inch diameter water line.

The Challenges

MTCo was tasked with providing construction staking for the above project. The primary challenge of the project was the at-grade intersection that remained in place during construction. This required constant communication with the contractor to provide staking that was accessible and useful during multiple stages of construction. The construction phasing removed several control monuments that were replaced during construction of the bridge structure.

The Results

MTCo replaced control used for the Bridge layout and verified the Bridge deck grades within one hundredth of a foot (0.01'). Multiple staking requests required that MTCo provide two survey crews within 24 hour notice. Thirty staking request were completed within three months, including over 5,000 feet of finish grade staking provided and checked within one week.
