I-880 Coyote Creek Bridge, Santa Clara

The Project

This project replaced the existing 600-foot long Coyote Creek Bridge as part of the I-880 Widening project. I-880 was designed to be widened to six lanes to relieve the worst traffic bottle neck in Santa Clara County from U.S. 101 to Montague Expressway.

The Challenges

In order to meet environmental and permit requirements, the structure design was to use a precast, prestressed concrete bulb-T girder structure. The challenge was how to erect the 160' long precast girders over the creek and to maintain the existing traffic.

The Results

MTCo conducted a constructability review meeting with contractor to identify the size of the crane needed for lifting the structure into place. The constructability review also studied the location for the crane staging to ensure it could reach the proper radius to make sure all girders could be lifted in place from the top of the bank.

After the bid, MTCo assisted the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority to review the Cost Reduction Incentive Program (CRIP) proposal proposed by the Contractor and subsequently a cast-in-place box girder was designed and constructed.
