Roseville Historic District, Roseville

The Project

This project provided preliminary engineering, environmental documentation, and PS&E for the beautification of Historic Old-Town Roseville. The improvements included full infrastructure improvements (water, sewer, storm drain, overhead electric undergrounding), roadway reconstruction, and pedestrian upgrades throughout the district. Several aesthetic features were installed with the project, including street furniture, planting of street trees, and decorative lighting.

The Challenges

Public outreach and public agency coordination were very important aspects to the success of this project. Several public workshops meetings with the Central Roseville Revitalization Committee and the Historic District Steering Committee were held to build a unifying consensus for this project. Incorporating infrastructure improvements along with architectural features such as a railroad view platform, seat-walls, and clocks in a small urban area also created unique design challenges. Installation of new utility infrastructure within the district required close attention to detail. Without as-built records from this early 1900's era district, extensive subsurface investigations were performed to ensure new facilities could be installed without delay.

The Results

The project was very successful in providing a “sense of place” in downtown Roseville. The Historic District has become a focal point in the community, and has become very attractive to new businesses and developments. Since completion of the project, a number of new businesses have opened within the district.
