Richard K. Tanaka, PE
President
Principal in Charge
In 1973, Tanaka joined Mark Thomas & Company, becoming a firm principal in 1979 and its president in 1999. Tanaka has more than 30 years' experience in planning, design, and construction of municipal and transportation projects. Over the course of his career, he has developed an extensive knowledge base of policies and design procedures for numerous agencies and cities within the Bay Area. His record of excellence in managing and meeting fast-track schedules for projects has brought great financial value to our clients and helped them meet public needs. As a firm principal, Tanaka has traditionally led and managed its most complex and multifaceted projects.

Michael J. Lohman, PE
Chief Operating Officer
Principal in Charge
A member of Mark Thomas & Company since 1982 and firm principal since 1996, Lohman became chief operating officer in 2007. Lohman began his engineering career with the firm and has more than 20 years' experience in municipal and transportation engineering, working with municipalities, resource agencies, and Caltrans. He brings extensive experience in planning and designing roadways and infrastructure improvements throughout California, and in managing environmental clearance for those projects. In addition to design, his expertise includes handling all aspects of right of way, drainage systems, utility placement, pedestrian traffic, and railroad crossings.

Robert A. Himes, PE
Principal in Charge
Himes' able management of the ever-increasing number of projects and staff in the Sacramento office has led to his position of company principal. Himes serves as regional division manager for the Sacramento and Fresno offices. He is responsible for overseeing Mark Thomas & Company's Sacramento and Central Valley operations as well as manages large, complex transportation and municipal projects. A Mark Thomas & Company veteran since 1986, Himes is known for his innovative geometric solutions for complex problems.

Jimmy W. Sims, PE
Principal in Charge
As one of our leading transportation engineering experts, Sims holds the position of principal and regional division manager. He leads the transportation and municipal operations in the South Bay region out of our San Jose office, overseeing the San Jose and San Carlos offices. His municipal, transportation, and infrastructure experience spans more than 25 years. Jimmy has managed the planning, design and construction of more than $500 million of roadway and site improvements for Cities and Agencies throughout Northern and Southern California.

Chris H. Rockway, PE

With more than 25 years in planning, designing and managing public works, transportation and infrastructure projects, Chris offers a wealth of experience to Sacramento area clients. Chris' position as principal reflects the breadth of knowledge and depth of experience our clients greatly appreciate.Chris manages our Pleasanton and Walnut Creek offices along with a design team in Sacramento. Chris is also the “Dean” of the Mark Thomas University and leads the Project Manager Academy.
